Wapato School District Attendance Philosophy

Regular school attendance is essential for students to achieve their maximum educational potential. Each school day provides students with valuable learning experiences that cannot be replicated. It is the responsibility of parents and students to ensure that all students attend school regularly and on time.

 

 

Definitions:

  • Tardy - Missing the first part of the school day (or period in middle and high school).
  • Absence - Missing 50% or more of the school day (or at least 4 periods in middle and high school)
  • Chronically Absent - Missing 10% of the school year, which equals 18 days over the course of the year or 2 days a month. This includes both excused and unexcused absences.

Frequently Asked Attendance Questions

    1. The school schedules a conference with the parent/guardian to identify barriers and offer support, such as: counselor, school social worker, administrative support staff or other staff as appropriate (McKinney Vento, Graduation Specialists. Etc.)
    2. Parent/student sign an attendance agreement with either attendance clerk or with building staff.
    1. The student will take a state approved Risks and Needs Assessment.
    2. The district will use the results of the assessment to create a plan to reduce student absences.
    3. For students with an IEP or 504 plan, the team will convene to consider the reasons for the absences and adjust the IEP or 504 plan as necessary.
    1. The parent/guardian and the school district through the attendance clerk enter into a contract to improve the student’s attendance OR the case can be referred to the Community Engagement Board.
    2. The school district through the attendance clerk may file truancy petitions with the juvenile court.
    3. If the student is not in compliance with a court order resulting from a truancy petition, the school district through the attendance clerk is required to file a contempt motion.
  • The WSD Community Engagement Board (CEB) aims to collaborate with students and families to identify obstacles and/or barriers, develop an action plan, and connect to resources that will improve school engagement, attendance and reduce the number of cases being referred to Yakama and Yakima County Juvenile/Truancy Court.
