Why should I put my child in the Dual Language Program?
- Your child will be taught to read, write, speak and listen in both Spanish and English
- Your child will become bilingual and biliterate in both languages if she/he stays in the program through high school graduation (it takes 5-7 years to really learn a second language)
- Dual language students do better in school and on state tests than their English only peers according to research by Collier and Thomas
- Students who continue in the program through high school graduation and meet the state requirements may receive a Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma
How does the program work?
- The program model is a 90/10 meaning TK, kindergarten and 1st grade students spend 90% of their time learning Spanish and 10% of their time learning English.
- Students learn to read in Spanish first
- The time allocation changes to 80/20 in 2nd grade, 70/30 in 3rd grade, by 5th grade they will have 50% of their instruction in Spanish and 50% in English.
Who can get into the Dual Language Program?
- All students who live within the Wapato boundaries are eligible to enroll in the DLP.
- Students whose home language survey notes any language other than English get first priority for enrollment
- English speaking students can join the program on a lottery system
When and where is the program held?
- The fall of the 2023-24 school year the District will open 2 DLP classes at Camas WELCOME Transitional Kindergarten, 2 Camas Kindergarten classes and 2 Simcoe Kindergarten classes
How do I enroll my child in the DLP?
- Parents must attend a DLP orientation meeting where applications will be available after the parents understand the requirements and expectations of the program
- Regular enrollment forms for the District must be completed as well
What if I don’t speak the language? How can I help my child at home?
- Parents can support students at home by making sure that they have the right environment and tools to get homework done (e.g., a quiet space and enough time, paper, dictionaries in both languages, writing utensils, and art supplies such as construction paper, paste, tape, and colored markers).
- Parents can also ask questions about the homework in the language spoken at home, thus giving the students opportunities to explain the assignment in their first language.
What will my child be learning?
- Students will be taught the Washington state standards in English Language arts, math, science and social studies as well as Spanish Language arts
- Students will have PE, music and other district specialist programs
¿Por qué debo poner a mi hijo en el Programa de Lenguaje Dual?
- A su hijo se le enseñará a leer, escribir, hablar y escuchar en español e inglés.
- Su hijo se volverá bilingüe y bialfabetizado en ambos idiomas si permanece en el programa hasta que se gradúe de la escuela secundaria (se necesitan de 5 a 7 años para aprender realmente un segundo idioma)
- A los estudiantes de doble idioma lo mejoran en la escuela y en las pruebas estatales que sus compañeros de inglés sólo según la investigación de Collier y Thomas
- Los estudiantes que continúan en el programa a través de la graduación de la escuela secundaria y cumplen con los requisitos estatales pueden recibir un sello de biliteracía en su diploma
¿Cómo funciona el programa?
- El modelo del programa es 90/10. Significa que los estudiantes de TK , kindergarten, y primer grado pasan el 90 % de su tiempo aprendiendo español y el 10 % de su tiempo aprendiendo inglés.
- Los estudiantes aprenden a leer en español primero
- La asignación de tiempo cambia a 80/20 en grado 2, 70/30 en grado 3, y en grado 5 tendrán el 50% de su instrucción en español y el 50% en inglés.
¿Quién puede ingresar al Programa de Lenguaje Dual?
- Todos los estudiantes que viven dentro de los límites de Wapato son elegibles para inscribirse en DLP.
- Los estudiantes que su encuesta sobre el idioma del hogar nota cualquier otro idioma que no sea el inglés tienen la primera prioridad para la inscripción
- Los estudiantes que solamente hablan inglés pueden unirse al programa en un sistema de lotería
¿Cuándo y dónde se lleva a cabo el programa?
- El otoño del año escolar 2023-24, el Distrito abrirá 2 clases de DLP en Camas BIENVENIDO Kindergarten de Transición, 2 clases de Kindergarten en Camas y 2 clases de Kindergarten en Simcoe
¿Cómo inscribo a mi hijo en el DLP?
- Los padres deben asistir a una reunión de orientación de DLP donde las solicitudes estarán disponibles después de que los padres comprendan los requisitos y expectativas del programa.
- También se deben completar los formularios de inscripción regulares para el Distrito.
¿Qué pasa si no hablo el idioma? ¿Cómo puedo ayudar a mi hijo en casa?
- Los padres pueden apoyar a los estudiantes en casa asegurándose de que tengan el entorno y las herramientas adecuadas para hacer la tarea (p. ej., un espacio tranquilo y tiempo suficiente, papel, diccionarios en ambos idiomas, utensilios para escribir y materiales de arte como papel de construcción, pegamento, cinta adhesiva y marcadores de colores).
- Los padres también pueden hacer preguntas sobre la tarea en el idioma que se habla en casa, dando así a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explicar la tarea en su lengua materna.
¿Qué estará aprendiendo mi hijo?
- A los estudiantes se les enseñarán los estándares del estado de Washington en lengua y literatura en inglés, matemáticas, ciencias y estudios sociales, así como en lengua y literatura en español.
- Los estudiantes tendrán educación física, música y otros programas especializados del distrito.
