My name is Maria Erickson and I am the current Board President of the Wapato School District. On behalf of our board I would like to say that we are very honored to have been chosen as a medium District Board of the year. We began every board meeting with this statement: "It is the goal of the Board to improve student achievement may this meeting encourage and support our goal." This is what we are committed to in Wapato. One example of our commitment is the Board's efforts to improve student achievement for our Native American students. We identified a gap and charged our superintendent to close the gap between our Native American students and the general population as a result of multiple measures we saw graduation rates rise, reading and math gaps decrease for elementary students, participation and engagement in advanced courses increase and participation and engagement in extracurricular activities rise. This could not have happened without the partnership with Yakama Nation. We appreciate and value this partnership. Earning this award is by no means the finish line, it is a boost that will keep us moving forward and serving our amazing students in Wapato. We are thankful to serve on our board. We will continue to be focused and intentional and always put our students first.
