Wapato Students Benefit From A Decade Of One Family's Generosity

This year marks a decade of Wapato students benefiting from the extreme generosity of the Heikell family.  Each of the past ten years Ellena and Roger Knobel have delivered a car load of school supplies that have been donated by their family.  This year was no different.  In mid-August the Knobel’s arrived packing boxes brimming with pencils, notebooks, crayons and much, much more.  Ellena is the daughter of Iris and Lorence Heikell who were educators in the Wapato School District for years.  Lorence Heikell was a teacher and principal of Wapato Elementary School for 36 years. Iris taught in Wapato, White Swan, Parker and Yakima.  In memory of Ellena’s parents the Knobel’s collect school supplies from their extended family at their annual family reunion.  They also get help from Ellena’s classmates from the Wapato High School Class of 1956.  Wapato School District cannot thank the Knobels, their family and the class of 1956 enough for their generosity.
